PHOENIX REVIEW!!!!!

Several months ago on our way back from New York City a fellow dj was playing his iPod shuffle and on came this rather poppy synth friendly band. I immediately asked what it was and was really digging it. He said it was a band called Phoenix. Immediately upon reaching my home I searched long and hard for their albums. I was so pleased when i listened to their albums, my two favorite being It's Never Been Like That and Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.

When I heard Phoenix was coming to Philly I freaked. We immediately got tix and were so pumped about seeing these talented French musicians take the stage. Fortunately the original dj who got me into Phoenix was unable to go (god damn projects!!!). The journey to the city and the show was intense but we got to the venue and I was impressed by the decorations, former bands playing there with their posters including one for the Decemberists and Belle and Sebastian.

The venue was the worst part of the show, no lies. The acoustics were absolutely horrible. When the opening act, Chairlift was on you couldn't understand any of the lyrics or hear anything in reality. It was rough but they did the best with what they could do. Their set lasted a good forty minutes, they closed it out with their huge hit "Bruises".

Phoenix came out to play their huge hit single "Lisztomania". From there the set was glorious. They played several older tracks off of It's Never Been Like That as well as Alphabetical and United. They were over the top with their light show making it hard for pictures by the way but when they closed out with a ten minute version of 1901 we were left in awe. This show was da bomb, I would gladly pay more money to see these talented artists live again but on one condition; they play a better venue

2009 Top Albums....SO FAR

so we are only nine months into the year but that doesn't mean i cant just make a list of teh best albums that have been dropped this year!

5. Wilco: Wilco (The Album)
i have to admit that i love the direction wilco went with this album, it's a real impressive feat to go most of your career without putting out a self titled let alone a self titled track. but yet wilco can do that bc of the fact that they are wilco. don't take the album for granted though, its a great piece of music so definitely worth a purchase.
GRADE REPORT: B-

4. The Dirty Projectors: Bitte Orca
when i was compiling this list i totally and utterly forgot these guys. how fucking awesome they sound! the first few tracks give you a led zeppelin feel but then it changes. this album should be spun or listened to by all fans of any genre of rock music.
GRADE REPORT: B

3. The Decemberists: The Hazards of Love
most of you guys know my feelings on this album, esp after seeing them live my view has changed a bit. it's a solid album from start to finish albeit not the best album the band has put out but still a great record by all means. it's confusing at times but hey, isn't that how concepts work?
GRADE REPORT: B

2. Say Hi (To Your Mom): Oohs and Aahs
i think my reason for loving this guy so much is his melodramatic vocals and synth driven sound. it's got this vibe that you just can't shake off. yeah it has pop elements but it still has that brooding semi smiths/cure vibe to it that you cant just shake.
GRADE REPORT: B+

1. Phoenix: Wolfgang Amedaus Phoenix

obviously one of the best albums of the year. it leaves you in awe after nine splendid tracks. these french indie synth driven rockers know what they are doing, i fell in over my head after listening to these mates.
GRADE REPORT: A+

im capping it at five but the other five are in no real order

Yeah Yeah Yeahs: It's Blitz
Imogen Heap: Ellipse
Regina Spektor: Far
Porcupine Tree: The Incident

tune in tonight for the second episode of the season!

September Albums

so september this year has been ripe with new releases and i must say i feel a bit disappointed by some of them.

MUSE: THE RESISTANCE

an interesting new sound for these guys, they traded in guitar riffs that would blow your mind away for haunting piano tracks that just leave you wondering what happened to these fellas? i have to applaud them for going in a new direction but i hope with album number six they make a change, be it a drastic change back or what not.
GRADE REPORT: C+

PORCUPINE TREE: THE INCIDENT
im not the biggest fan of porcupine tree but this new album is mainly one freaking giant song of death. thats how insane steve wilson is. real freaking insane. its so hard for me to just sit there and listen to it but even still
GRADE REPORT: B+

BRAND NEW: DAISY
a cross between emo and indie these guys are always a staple in my ipod (Christopher Walken). but this new album stays true most of the time to Deja Entendu and The Devil and God Are Raging Inside of Me. the first track is abysmal but other than that the album keeps up the known sound with some new styles. it's not as much of a disappointment as muse...
GRADE REPORT: B

so you see this month has been a bit dry for releases that i can think of off the top of my head. next month stay tuned for new flaming lips where we'll have a huge review of the 18 track spectacular

tune in tomorrow nite for more of kyle and tim's delicious voices

Kanye West

everyone is making a huge deal about this kanye west thing. and i will admit i am at the same time making a bit of a big deal about it as well but only because the entire internet is doing it!

what kanye west did at the VMAs [which have not been relevant for the past decade] was immature and rude. kanye has no respect for anyone other than himself or those that he thinks is worthy of his praise.

kanye thinks hes gods gift to music and the world when in reality he is a horrible excuse for a musician. but my thoughts on kanye remain the same as they did yesterday. he should quit on life. thank you

New DCFC

so narrow stairs was put out in 2008 and it was by far my favorite album of the year and rightfully so it was one of the best. on their narrow stairs tour they were spectacular on stage. so the time is coming near for a new DCFC album right? who knows, all i know is that ben gibbard has been quoted in rolling stone saying that the new postal service album is indie rock's chinese democracy.

so we are gifted with new DCFC music but with a terrible cost:

ITS ON TEH UPCOMING NEW MOON SOUNDTRACK

yes DCFC might gain large amounts of popularity and leave the underground indie scene of which they really werent too much a part of thanks to signing with a large label and having huge singles on alt rock stations but to have to put up with their latest release coinciding with a shitty vampire movie i feel like a part of me has died.

FUCK TWILIGHT
FUCK VAMPIRES

RIP Patrick Swayze

i'm sure the news has reached all of our ears by now, patrick swayze, actor, man and 1980's stud has passed on.

here's the article from the associated press

By CHRISTY LEMIRE (AP) – 13 minutes ago

LOS ANGELES — Patrick Swayze, the hunky actor who danced his way into viewers' hearts with "Dirty Dancing" and then broke them with "Ghost," died Monday after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 57.

"Patrick Swayze passed away peacefully today with family at his side after facing the challenges of his illness for the last 20 months," said a statement released Monday evening by his publicist, Annett Wolf. No other details were given.

Fans of the actor were saddened to learn in March 2008 that Swayze was suffering from a particularly deadly form of cancer.

He had kept working despite the diagnosis, putting together a memoir with his wife and shooting "The Beast," an A&E drama series for which he had already made the pilot. It drew a respectable 1.3 million viewers when the 13 episodes ran in 2009, but A&E said it had reluctantly decided not to renew it for a second season.

Swayze said he opted not to use painkilling drugs while making "The Beast" because they would have taken the edge off his performance. He acknowledged that time might be running out given the grim nature of the disease.

When he first went public with the illness, some reports gave him only weeks to live, but his doctor said his situation was "considerably more optimistic" than that.

"I'd say five years is pretty wishful thinking," Swayze told ABC's Barbara Walters in early 2009. "Two years seems likely if you're going to believe statistics. I want to last until they find a cure, which means I'd better get a fire under it."

A three-time Golden Globe nominee, Swayze became a star with his performance as the misunderstood bad-boy Johnny Castle in "Dirty Dancing." As the son of a choreographer who began his career in musical theater, he seemed a natural to play the role.

A coming-of-age romance starring Jennifer Grey as an idealistic young woman on vacation with her family and Swayze as the Catskills resort's sexy (and much older) dance instructor, the film made great use of both his grace on his feet and his muscular physique.

It became an international phenomenon in the summer of 1987, spawning albums, an Oscar-winning hit song in "(I've Had) the Time of My Life," stage productions and a sequel, 2004's "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights," in which he made a cameo.

Swayze performed and co-wrote a song on the soundtrack, the ballad "She's Like the Wind," inspired by his wife, Lisa Niemi. The film also gave him the chance to utter the now-classic line, "Nobody puts Baby in a corner."

And it allowed him to poke fun at himself on a "Saturday Night Live" episode, in which he played a wannabe Chippendales dancer alongside the corpulent — and frighteningly shirtless — Chris Farley.

A major crowdpleaser, the film drew only mixed reviews from critics, though Vincent Canby wrote in The New York Times, "Given the limitations of his role, that of a poor but handsome sex-object abused by the rich women at Kellerman's Mountain House, Mr. Swayze is also good. ... He's at his best — as is the movie — when he's dancing."

Swayze followed that up with the 1989 action flick "Road House," in which he played a bouncer at a rowdy bar. But it was his performance in 1990's "Ghost" that showed his vulnerable, sensitive side. He starred as a murdered man trying to communicate with his fiancee (Demi Moore) — with great frustration and longing — through a psychic played by Whoopi Goldberg.

Swayze said at the time that he fought for the role of Sam Wheat (director Jerry Zucker wanted Kevin Kline) but once he went in for an audition and read six scenes, he got it.

Why did he want the part so badly? "It made me cry four or five times," he said of Bruce Joel Rubin's Oscar-winning script in an AP interview.

"Ghost" provided yet another indelible musical moment: Swayze and Moore sensually molding pottery together to the strains of the Righteous Brothers' "Unchained Melody." It also earned a best-picture nomination and a supporting-actress Oscar for Goldberg, who said she wouldn't have won if it weren't for Swayze.

"When I won my Academy Award, the only person I really thanked was Patrick," Goldberg said in March 2008 on the ABC daytime talk show "The View."

Swayze himself earned three Golden Globe nominations, for "Dirty Dancing," "Ghost" and 1995's "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar," which further allowed him to toy with his masculine image. The role called for him to play a drag queen on a cross-country road trip alongside Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo.

His heartthrob status almost kept him from being considered for the role of Vida Boheme.

"I couldn't get seen on it because everyone viewed me as terminally heterosexually masculine-macho," he told the AP then. But he transformed himself so completely that when his screen test was sent to Steven Spielberg, whose Amblin pictures produced "To Wong Foo," Spielberg didn't recognize him.

Among his earlier films, Swayze was part of the star-studded lineup of up-and-comers in Francis Ford Coppola's 1983 adaptation of S.E. Hinton's novel "The Outsiders," alongside Rob Lowe, Tom Cruise, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Emilio Estevez and Diane Lane. Swayze played Darrel "Dary" Curtis, the oldest of three wayward brothers — and essentially the father figure — in a poor family in small-town Oklahoma.

Other '80s films included "Red Dawn," "Grandview U.S.A." (for which he also provided choreography) and "Youngblood," once more with Lowe, as Canadian hockey teammates.

In the '90s, he made such eclectic films as "Point Break" (1991), in which he played the leader of a band of bank-robbing surfers, and the family Western "Tall Tale" (1995), in which he starred as Pecos Bill. He appeared on the cover of People magazine as its "Sexiest Man Alive" in 1991, but his career tapered off toward the end of the 1990s, when he also had stay in rehab for alcohol abuse. In 2001, he appeared in the cult favorite "Donnie Darko," and in 2003 he returned to the New York stage with "Chicago"; 2006 found him in the musical "Guys and Dolls" in London.

Swayze was born in 1952 in Houston, the son of Jesse Swayze and choreographer Patsy Swayze, whose films include "Urban Cowboy."

He played football but also was drawn to dance and theater, performing with the Feld, Joffrey and Harkness Ballets and appearing on Broadway as Danny Zuko in "Grease." But he turned to acting in 1978 after a series of injuries.

Within a couple years of moving to Los Angeles, he made his debut in the roller-disco movie "Skatetown, U.S.A." The eclectic cast included Scott Baio, Flip Wilson, Maureen McCormack and Billy Barty.

Swayze had a couple of movies in the works when his diagnosis was announced, including the drama "Powder Blue," starring Jessica Biel, Forest Whitaker and his younger brother, Don, which was scheduled for release this year.

Off-screen, he was an avid conservationist who was moved by his time in Africa to shine a light on "man's greed and absolute unwillingness to operate according to Mother Nature's laws," he told the AP in 2004.

Swayze was married since 1975 to Niemi, a fellow dancer who took lessons with his mother; they met when he was 19 and she was 15. A licensed pilot, Niemi would fly her husband from Los Angeles to Northern California for treatment at Stanford University Medical Center, People magazine reported in a cover story.

RIP sweet prince

Batman: Arkham Asylum

a few weeks ago one of the greatest comic characters (im a marvel guy so my opinion is skewed) starred in a video game that was heralded as the greatest comic video game ever conceived. now if we think of this on a logical note this is not a hard feat to accomplish in the least. we generally associate comic characters with shitty video games. even the comic film turns out real shoddy games.

so when the programmers at edios and the writers over at DC claimed that arkham asylum is the super hero game to trump all games they were making a huge boast. they said it would have the greatest enemies of the dark knight. in my mind that would feature the joker, two-face, the riddler, scarecrow, mr. freeze. all of these villains working together in a single game! that would have been quite glorious. now this was coming off the heels of the dark knight's great success at the box office.

sure this game had large amounts of hype surrounding it much like the movie. some began to wonder if this would just be a giant flop like most games with the caped crusader in it. the producers announced that the game would feature most if not all of the voice actors from TAS in the '90's. so mark hamil is to voice the joker. makes me so excited for it.

its june 2009, the game is on the verge of being put out. then the news comes saying its being delayed for another period of time. so disappointed. i did no research on the game, i didn't want any spoilers at all so i just had to wait till mid august for it. i will admit to this i tend to play through most games on my computer as compared to my xbox 360; but then again thats if the game is a pc ported game as well. arkham just called for me to play with its dark and brooding and mature graphics and character design.

the demo popped out early july and i had to try it. at the local gamestop i picked up the ps3 controller and began to try it. it was only one little challenge mode and the controls didn't feel awkward but the combat system seemed a bit off. they want you to do a variety of moves but you really cant when you have only four buttons, one move punches or kicks pending on your positioning, one counters, the other stuns and the other jumps over enemies. talk about diversity! the game was to be a fusion of an arcade style beat em up with elements of stealth in it. i felt let down after i finished the demo. i prayed they would use the delay to tweak the combat system.

logging onto steam one day in mid to late august i saw the demo to arkham was made available. after waiting several hours of its download i began to play it. this time it was the first twenty minutes of gameplay. i had a few problems with sound but that was resolved shortly after. it ran smoothly, the videos were rendered so well and the smooth transitions were to die for. i felt uncomfortable using the keyboard and mouse so i used the xbox controller which felt more at home. yet the combat system didn't feel fixed. i wasnt sure how i felt.

weeks later judgment day came. i began to load her up in the xbox and i sat there patiently waiting for the game to begin. as i played through the game i felt that at parts it was like most games in the genre: stereotypical. but this is where it gets you, its based on a comic book character, the richness of his history provides such an array of possibilities. the controls were solid, combat was still a bit iffy but with upgrades it felt better.

the story was compelling but not flawless. it didn't deliver as much on the greatest adversaries of batman as it did making the ones they chose to use fit in. yes they worked in several of his worst enemies, poison ivy, scarecrow, the joker and harley quinn. but where was two-face? where was mr. freeze? the riddler was constantly teasing you forcing you to solve his riddles which added nice and frustarting moments to the game, solving riddles adds more to your completion percentage and unlocks character bios and trophies but it wasnt the same as fighting the riddler.

the other villains in the game i guess are well known [as most batman villains are] but not as prolific. you have killer croc, zsaez [spelling?], bane. but what was a bit on the sad side was how easy some of the game was, mainly the boss encounters, its all pattern based, very little changing up on the pace. oh but it was still fun up until killer croc or bane pulverized you the first time then you solved the pattern and you're like why didnt i see this earlier.

as your progress you gain upgrades to your arsenal of bat-gadgets. pretty cool i guess. the game ends a bit abruptly when you get to the final fight, it leaves a bit of a sour taste in your mouth much like the end of the dark knight did. so it seems like they both were one in the same [i had a little bit of a laugh there]

the best parts of the game were the scarecrow induced 2-d esque side scrolling levels. they were interesting and i wish there was more of them. overall i say this was a pretty awesome game and would play it again if there was some DLC added to it

does arkham make the grade? yes i give it a nice strong A-

The Return of Kyle And Tim

today the schedule was announced for KUR's fall lineup. It's impressive how long this show has endured a consistent time slot. i remember my first semester on the air being on a sunday night from ten to midnight. it was quite an interesting time and then the next semester being on from ten to midnight on a monday and then moving over to tuesday and then back to monday from 11-1 then back to our 10-12 slot. it feels like home to us on the station being on that late.

so what kind of shit does kyle and tim have for you this semester? how about some more redonk named bands that make no sense to you guys but sound really cool when you listen to them!?

the first show is all planned out and what the hell we might have a new segment and whatever else i feel like throwing in there with tim.

i forgot to mention that the show starts on the 15th of this month so be prepared for some kick a$$ music
