Tomorrow Nite!!!

wow its been a week since i posted, well kinda. with this tuesday's show we have a fuck ton of new music. hmmm so what do we have? we have new music from Depeche Mode off of their upcoming album Sounds of the Universe, and i must say it feels like Depeche Mode. How does more new music sound? Do you guys like Silversun Pickups? Yarp new music off the upcoming Swoon album, their second. Hmm is that not enough new music for you? Do you guys like Placebo? Yeah the title track for their upcoming album The Battle for the Sun. Do we have more? I'm thinking about this long and hard. Peter, Bjorn and John have their new album out that very day so we got a new track off of that album. Isn't this awesome? Do you guys like Death Cab For Cutie? I love them so we are playing all the new tracks off of their new ep that comes out March 31 online and starts being sold on their tour in Philadelphia April 7. And I know how much you guys love Neil Patrick Harris in his total gay aura so we are playing for the laughters of a million non listeners a Neil Patrick Harris song...hmmm that could make us totally and utterly homosexual. Or at least supporters of the gay rights movement.

anyway toon in mother fuckers or else (i have yet to think of the consequences srsly!)

The Concept Album

In popular music, a concept album is an album that is "unified by a theme, which can be instrumental, compositional, narrative, or lyrical".[1] Commonly, concept albums tend to incorporate preconceived musical or lyrical ideas rather than being improvised or composed in the studio, with all songs contributing to a single overall theme or unified story. This is in contrast to the practice of an artist or group releasing an album consisting of a number of unconnected (lyrically or otherwise) songs performed by the artist.

well with the release of the new decemberists album (which is a concept album) i feel the urge to list some of the best concept albums of all time in my opinion

David Bowie: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars
Coheed and Cambria: All of their albums
The Flaming Lips: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
The Mars Volta: Frances The Mute (and their others)
Of Montreal: Skeletal Lamping
Porcupine Tree: Fear of a Blank Planet
The Smashing Pumpkins: Machina/The Machines of God

several of these bands are not surprising to have to be on this list but if you dig the concept of the concept album then give them a listen

The Hazards of Love

this morning i awoke and ran to my mailbox. i was stoked and ready to recieve my copy of my most anticipated album of the year: the hazards of love by the decemberists. i tore off the plastic wrapping and instantly popped it into my computer and ripped it to my ipod. since i broke the headphones i possess i had to wait till work to give it a listen to. so here is my review. now after listening to it i am lost and confused about the story so here is what colin meloy said about the album:
The album began when Meloy—long fascinated by the British folk revival of the 1960s—found a copy of revered vocalist Anne Briggs's 1966 EP, titled The Hazards of Love. Since there was no actual song with the album's title, he set out to write one, but was soon immersed in something much larger.
The Hazards of Love tells the tale of Margaret (Voiced by Lavender Diamond's Becky Stark), a woman from a city near the forest, and her lover William (voiced by Meloy), a shape-shifting forest dweller. Margaret discovers she is pregnant, and sets off into the forest to find William. Their love is threatened by the jealous forest queen (Voiced by My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worden), and a murdering knave. The range of sounds reflects the characters' arcs and emotions as well as the pacing of the story line, from the tender sing-song "Isn't It a Lovely Night?" to the thunderous rhythm of "The Queen's Rebuke/The Crossing."

1. Prelude: this track is just eerie once it picks up. i feel that it is not really needed but it is a soft opening into the album. rather than go straight into the first legitimate song they choose to do this. it sounds real awkward to be honest. it then picks up with the organ which i love how they use it in this album and in most of their songs. sounds like this is gonna be depressing if you ask me...

2. The Hazards of Love 1 (The Prettiest Whistles Won't Wrestle the Thistles Undone): this song is moved into seamlessly from the first track. as the organ slowly dies the guitar slowly picks up. colin meloy's crooning begins and the lyrics as always seem so unique and his voice has that unique annunciation to it. it seems like this song sets up the entire story for the album with this being a concept album. it talks about a deer being found by a woman [i think the main character] and i wonder if this some kind of metaphor for anything. the songs chorus or refrain is just stating the hazards of love, thats all it is. i like it because it doesnt follow conventional song writing

3. A Bower Scene: a heavier song for them, relatively short. once you get through the first verse it goes into a realitvely heavy short instrumental then calms back down. meloy seems to be at the top of his game with his voice soaring talking about young maragret and it seems as if he is talking about a pregnency using intriqute dialoge. the female vocals are nice and soft towards the end of the song, i believe this is supposed to be margaret singing which i like, very beautiful voice and the instrumental has a constant and steady beat to it.

4. Won't Want for Love (Margaret in the Taiga): little did i know without looking at my ipod that the female vocals marked a change from the third track to the fourth. my main question is how are they gonna perform this song live with a female voice unless she is a real part of the band. the problem here is it feels like the same song as the last one with a seemingly flawless transisition

5. The Hazards of Love 2 (Wager All): another song that flows right into. meloy begins to sound much softer and uses his lyrical charm to woo the young woman. and it feels that way as he seems to be cooing through his throat. i love the mixture of the guitar with the drums. the drums take a focus here as it keeps everything in check. obviously he is singing about having sex with her but he makes it less obvious by using different terms to describe it and making it exceedingly romantic. i actually really love this song after listening to the first part. half way through the song he starts singing oh the hazards of love again. yeah they reuse this but i accept it sadly. it begins to pick up but it still has that strong constant drum beat. good song. fits the album, works as a single song

6. The Queen's Approach: very short instrumental piece. it is an odd transisiton from the previous song, banjo with what appears to be a violin. two instruments rarely used made to sound beautiful together.

7. Isn't It a Lovely Night?: just the opening instrumental makes me think of that scene from the lady and the tramp and you all know what i am talking about. it starts off with the female singing about the evening. very subtle instrumentals. it seems that they use the violin again which i actually really like in this style of music, the odder the instruments the better the sound is. it feels like you are meant to have sympathy for the character in some capacity based upon how well she is singing and the tone and pitch she has. upon doing further research there are two different female characters, the queen (shara worden) and maragret (becky stark). the song ends on a beautiful solo that no one can lie and say they hate

8. The Wanting Comes in Waves/Repaid: my favorite song on the album thus far. the piano is just so creepy and i love that. meloy begins to sound like he's losing his mind in the words he is saying. "still the wanting comes in waves!/and you delievered me from danger then..." it sounds like he wants you to have the sympathy for his character when upon doing further research he voices the vile rake. and once it picks up this track it feels like the end of an album. he reaches to the bottom of his heart to out sing the choir that appears to be in the background at one point then it reaches this solo that just makes you tap your feet. the female vocals pick up and feel real strong and fit the instrument going in the background. the main problem is telling the difference in which character it is. once colin begins to sing it goes to the piano that i love so much. it feels like the song is repetitive but its no where near that in a negative way. its telling a story which makes it acceptable right?

9. Interlude: just a soft quiet instrumental to sooth us after hearing a rough and harsh six minute track, it fits, it works, feels like one of the opening tracks to a coheed album [lol]

10. The Rake's Song: this is the song about the villian in the story so that should give you a slight clue as to what it is about. now this was the first song to be released off of the album. it seems to be this bleak song with a uplifting instrumental. classic decemberists song imo. it seems to show the evil in this character as he talks about the birth of his children. the lyrics are very straight forward and you can tell what his intentions are as he seems to recollect about his misdeeds. the instruments in the background fit the words being let out of his mouth. it seems to be full of anger but not enough to make it not the same band. when he approaches to singing "alright alright" it seems like maybe the ghosts of his children are singing in the background [there really is a few extra voices]. the funny thing about this story is that he doesnt care about it.

11. The Abduction of Margaret: hmm flowing directly from the rake's song, most definitley the heaviest decemberists song ever. i got lost in the story now because i am trying to make sense of it. if margaret died in the previous song doesnt that mean that she is still alive or did he marry the evil queen?

12. The Queen's Rebuke/The Crossing: well i think the female vocal in this track is the queen. hmmm it seems that the queen is in love with the narrarator but i just cant tell. her voice seems to have changed into a more wrathful and vengeful voice. it seems that the main character is ungrateful based upon the words she is saying. the instruments is what really stand out in this song. its dark and heavy. which actually surprises me for a decemberists song. im sitting here with it on my ipod playing and wondering why what happened? its almost as dark as the culling of the fold and mariner's revenge song. i keep losing track of where each song ends, that is the sign of a good concept album, it all flows together. the instrumental solo at the last thirty five seconds is actually one of my favorite parts of this song, the organ. holy shit its orgasmic!

13. Annan Water: this song feels different than that of the previous song. it seems that regret is sweeping over the narrarator or maybe just him feeling real sad bc of the death of his wife. i am not real sure what is going on. maybe the queen is his mother to a certain extent and she never liked his woman. hmm i think i could write a paper to it. but nonetheless its a much smoother song, and it seems as if the story has just reached the climax. talking about drowning and it gets a scitar solo around three and a half minutes in which i have to applaud them for using the unique rarely used instruments and for using them successfully without making it feel forced. i am not sure how i feel about this song, i am torn between really liking it and just liking it. we'll see upon further listening.

14. Margaret in Captivity: this song has another kind of creepy value to it with the way the guitar is being played. once the female vocals kick in it picks up and makes it feel like the character is being help captive and the male is going to her rescue. or maybe he is talking about killing her. it could be meloy is representing two characters and it isnt being defined real well. i am not really loving this song but its ok. tis not the worst one on the album but even still with a little work on the explanation it might make some more sense.

15. The Hazards of Love 3 (Revenge!): right from the get go this song hooks you in. remember the eerie piano from the wanting comes in waves it starts off with a fast version of that. kicking out the guitar they leave it with a piano and it just gets creepy, want to make it creepier? its sung by the children that were killed. one of the most bizarre songs on teh album. imagine the kids cooing the line "father your children are all here" when they are dead!? like is he going insane. just imagine all the imagery this album would put out if it were made into a moive ala Tommy or The Wall. my favorite line in this song is "spare the rod then you'll the child but i prefer the lash" its just so messed up and masochistic that you are just freaked out by a little child singing it.

16. The Wanting Comes in Waves (Reprise): this here is just a short repirse of my favorite on the track. it adds to it, meloy raises once more from the bottom of his throat to have the words the wanting comes in waves fly from his throat to the air and your ears. the eerie cooing in the background of younger or female vocals adds to the factor. hmm i like this short reprise very much

17. The Hazards of Love 4 (The Drowned): the big finale. this is where they close it off. it starts off real quiet and smooth like. i like this as an ending. it seems that there is sorrow in what happened and i must say, if i werent so god damn confused i might be crying. it has a twang in it that gives it a slight country feel but it is most definitley not anything of the like

so what is my final review. solid album. i must say but its not what i thought it would be. which if you think about it it could be something good or bad. i like most of the songs on this album and it has that feel that is a normal decemberists album, but in no way is it like thier two best albums (one of which being castaways and cut outs). it feels like colin wants to go big or go broke. the crane wife was like this as well. i have nothing against concept albums, dont get me wrong they are good but they can also be bad. i have heard a few, the wall was good, fucked up yes but good, the who's tommy i hear was good. but there was also my chemical romance's the black parade which was ok but it was trying so hard to be an album that would be remembered forever as the album that was our verison of classic rock's best bands. so it has the potential to suck or rock. this one is borderline holy shit fuck this is rape. so i have to give this album a score of 8.7/10

but take heed imo it is still the best album of the year.

We Are Indie Rock 101

that could be our new slogan i think. so some new things on the site/blog is a poll. i would love for people to vote on it bc it might be important and affect the show and maybe the site.

so this is what is new....

nothing at all

i got quite bored and felt like posting, i am going to upload the show onto megaupload so if people missed it because they were drinking they can download it, the show itself is only about 130 MB which if you think about it isn't that big, now i would like to mention that the first ten or fifteen minutes of the file is the show before us and our good buddy andrew palamara as usual covering for ralph flavin. it's so depressing that he always does such a good job, nay wait sexy job, and its only covering for a man who just does't seem to give a damn about the show! sadly we don't have anything to link you to for him or his show [and by his show i mean ralph flavin...]

on another side note tim has finally accepted my email allowing him to post on the blog, his name is the dogfish one so keep an eye out for his posts, it might be important but it could also be useless banter!

im trying to think of other links to place in the side that would be pertinant to our site but i am not quite sure what would be helpful

the weekend approaches and i must say i am quite excited, with my computer dead [not really dead per say] i have more time to do things, been playing resident evil 5 and i am real close to beating it so hopefully i get both done in the same day that way things can go back to normal

Next Week

well i know this is real early but i am feeling totally and utterly lazy towards making a show for next week for several reasons, one being that it is going to be my 22nd birthday and well i want to celebrate lol but i doubt i will. so what are we doing for the twenty fourth? well i have been advertising this for several weeks we will be playing the entire new decemberists album from start to finish not only because it is my birthday but because the decemberists kick ass. seriously. i'll have an album review posted earlier that day because its gonna be an amazing album hopefully.

so from there on the following week we will be playing some new peter, bjorn and john (hitting the shelves 03/31/09) and new yeah yeah yeahs (04/04/09) and a list of other songs that i haven't even derived from our amazing itunes library of music which at least on my computer is a tally of over 100 gb of music which is insane. so be prepared for variety!!!

its so odd that the semester has been going so fast that it just makes me sad. i am not quite sure what i plan on doing over the summer, maybe more podcasts but we will find out when may rolls around.

so for the time being enjoy this beautiful music video of the decemberists performing o valencia!

Resident Evil 5

so it was the friday the thirteenth. the second time in the past two months which was a strange coincidence if you ask me. but to me it was pay day. i got my check and cashed it and i thought what should i do with my eighty dollars? most of my friends were bugging me to buy resident evil 5 and i knew they would be playing it more than me since i know my friends, most of them are obsessive about completing a game like this [i remember andy playing 4 all fucking day long till he beat that napoleon prick] so i said you know what i want to play this game myself, and i set down rules in my head. no one should be allowed to beat the game before me ya know?

as soon as i got back i tore the packaging off of the game case and popped it into my sexbox and having this being played in hd on my tv i was just blown away. from the opening cut scene to the first few levels i was addicted. the controls felt a bit awkard at first but now it feels like second nature so that compliant goes out the window after a short period of time of playing. graphically speaking this game looks real with a few flaws, some of the color schemes are a bit off and well all of the "zombies" are made of maybe one or two different skins which i understand makes it easier to program but at the same time it lacks originality [there is one that looks like saddam huessien] but it feels like RE4 which is a good thing and a bad thing. 4 was the first one i ever played and i loved it, i feel that i hailed that as the game of the year.

at the beginning of the game there is no real plot development but as you go through you begin to piece things together. its a shame that they make some things so obvious it hurts. but there is a few references to 4 and leon kennedy which i thought was interesting since in the instruction manuel when they gave a history of RE they totally ignored that game

aside from the impressive graphics that tend to make chris redfield lack a neck the music is amazing. i have the soundtrack which i will be using for bed music on the show is a large part of the thrill of the game. you sit there and once the "oh shit zombies up in this joint" music comes on you are sitting at the edge of your seat wondering where they are and when they jump out of nowhere you yourself jump just a tiny bit

it feels a bit redundant with the puzzles and the constant shooting of the same exact zombies but when there is a lot of things going on at once and your surrounded by beautiful scenery which just so happens to be full of "dead" africans you best be paying more attention to whats around you.

so i'm not done the game yet but that doesn't mean i cant write a review. the bosses are annoying and repetitive when it comes to how you beat them but then again it is a game so that is supposed to happen, i would have to give this game a score of: 9/10

New Look, More EPIC?

We here at the Kyle And Tim Epic Blog here feel that we need to stay constantly evolving with the times and need to make a blander more boring looking blog! So we thought and discussed with our fifty something year old business colleagues what to do about it. And what they came up with was actually far from the new changes you see here. They wanted to revert to paper and pencil and newspaper boys. Talk about old fashioned, they talked our ear off about well back in their day...yawn and boring, so we took care of the problem by doing some simple mathematical equations!

Now this is the new look for the blog, looks a bit more professional and since I know nothing about HTML or JavaScript or whatever they use then I really can't do much about it so if Tim figures it out then that would be swell. But anyway this is what we have here and it works fine.

Next week is Saint Patty's Day. We might play some U2 just for the laughters of us all because it will be nice and sweet. So why not take a few swigs of ale while listening to the most epic show in the universe!!!!

Who Watched The Watchmen?

Ok, here is goes. I used to never read anything aside from the occasional manga but over the summer i mutated into an American comic freak. No lies. One of the first characters I started reading was Batman. The Long Halloween, Dark Victory etc... and then I touched a few one shot Marvel stories, The Civil War, Zombies ya know stuff like that. I finally got around to reading Watchmen. I felt this strange love towards this nihlistic novel. I have read only one Alan Moore book before and it was V For Vendetta which i felt was a solid read. Upon finishing the novel I was impressed by how most of the characters flaws were stronger than most of their positive outlooks.

Rorschach was by far my favorite upon a first read. He was normal until one event changed his life, well normal is by far a far fetched term in his case. But he lost his mind and was no longer who he really was, he was just Rorschach. If there was no back story to his character then there would be no sympathy. Dr. Manhattan is someone who you want to hate so bad because of his lack of emotion for humanity and everything else in general. But upon reading the novel you see all that he sees more in depth or at least to a certain extent. Each character in the novel is given insight into why they are the way they are. You begin to realize they are human beings just like us just having taken on a larger responsibility.

I went to the Dark Knight and attached to it was the trailer for this film and on it was a song that I felt fit the film, The Smashing Pumpkins: The End is the Beginning The Beginning is the End, and instantly I was excited at first glance upon seeing the amazing visuals. I sat there and thought if anyone can do a damn good job pulling this film successfully it would either be Christopher Nolan or Zach Synder [I felt this way about Synder in highest of hopes]. The idea of a Watchmen film never really left my mind. From that moment on it became and obsession.

When December rolled around and hearing about the possible delay thanks to the law suit I was upset and once March rolled around I had been exceedingly tired of seeing the commercials on TV but still wanted to see the film. So when I got my ticket I was doing the preverbal fist pump. So I sat in the theater with my Hot Topic shirt with the Comedian upon it and my sweatshirt with the logo for the film upon it with a tub of buttery popcorn and a large ass mother fucking drink and I watched it.

The first half hour or so was almost entirely accurate to the novel. The opening sequence and the like. I should have realized how many times Synder would have used the slo-mo bull shit from 300 or how over stylized the film would have been and yes it was but I tried so hard to ignore it. Overall the film was real artsy, the imagry is what sold me the most on it. The dark coloring the excellent costume design, the amazing cg and decent make up job all was impressive.

The dialog through most of the film in the parts that were ripped from the book were almost exact to the puncuation. In terms of story there was a few changes but upon discussion on that I came to a conclusion that it had to have been changed for it to be taken seriously by movie going audiences and people who don't know how to read a masterpiece.

The cinematography was bland in some points, the actions were over done. Most of the fight scenes had to have extreme exaggerations on them but why? Why did you have to freeze the frame into a slow moving object as the blood dripped onto the badge as he is about to be thrown out the window and keep the audio at the same pace? It's not real logical! All the fight sequences save for the Rorschach one were over the top, no need for us to see slow motion punches from Nite Owl onto some nameless thug. And along those lines, these guys aren't trained! So why is Nite Owl using real kung fu mixed with wrestling manuvers like a pro? It doesn't make sense! But accept it I did because I was being leinent on the film since I wanted to be in love with it.

The acting wasn't as bad as some people make it seem. It felt that Jackie Earle Harley tried and put out a damn good Rorschach. My biggest complaint is that it sounded a tad bit too much like Christian Bale's Batman. But I still felt that it was one of the best jobs in the film. Harley had it so that you weren't sure whether or not you should hate or love Rorschach. He gave that extra dimension that several of the characters lacked and it wasn't just because of the characters multiple personas. Now Jeffery Dean Morgan gave the Comedian a little more than I expected to be given. The Comedian entering the film was not my favorite character and upon leaving the theater he was damn close. His character was an integral part in the story in the comic but they cut out the reason as to why he was in the film, disappointing. Most of Morgan's scenes in the film were via flashbacks and the like and they had to make him look older and younger throughout the film and damn it worked. The way he delievered the lines, he was just pure bad assery. The rest of the cast was lacking in this enthusiasm. Billy Crudup as Dr. Manhattan/Jon Osterman seemed to have some of the shittiest dialog in the film. He tried rather hard to portray emotion when Manhattan doesn't have as much emotion as Crudup portrayed. Although some of his dialog was rather interesting and with a voice that was almost as flat as the cherry pepsi I had last night which made sense for the character. As for Patrick Wilson I totally agree with my collegue on that he hammed it up entirely but his role wasn't one of the worst I have ever seen, it was acceptable. Malin Akerman was mainly eye candy if there ever was one and Matthew Goode as Ozymandias was well flat and stale but I feel that it felt.

The music placement was one of the worst things in the world. I can't emphasize this enough. In the trailers they had the Pumpkins song as well as Muse's Take A Bow but neither of these were seen in the film, by seen I mean heard. So disappointing and the impressive soundtrack that was scored by Tyler Bates was kept at the downlow volume wise which was so sad. But the best job done in the entire film for music was the placement of Tears For Fears' Everybody Wants To Rule the World, elevator music version while Ozy was stating why he is totally in the right about what ever the plot development that is being developed. I am with holding spoilers lol.

So all in all I have to say the film was mediocre as a translation to a comic to film but as a film it was real good. It tried to remain as faithful as possible. I just hope that when the deluxe director's cut comes out that most of these problems are fixed. I still say take a look at the film.

Tomorrow Night

Tomorrow night is sure to be a blast for all you folks since it marks the triumphant return of myself and my studly co-host Tim. It's been an interesting week abroad as in away from the university. Personally my break was quite the interesting one spending the first six days studying my scrawny butt off whilst hanging out with my pals in da 215. Spending the final weekend at the IBS conference in New York City. Great times were had by all and it shall be a weekend I shan't forget unless I get stricken with amnesia. But boy we got some great stuff for you guys this week, including what I believe is the next single from Franz Ferdinand as well as some Rilo Kiley and our usual doses from the three greatest bands that have walked the indie scene: The Shins, Death Cab For Cutie and The Decemberists

In other news my big 22nd birthday is coming up and that is a big day for releases in general. Coheed and Cambria releases their "Neverender" [I think that is the name] which is set to sell for a hundred plus bucks and is only limited print but oh well. The Decemberists album, "The Hazards of Love" hits store shelves that day and i am totally stoked for this one by the way. Quantum of Solace hits the dvd rack and The Tales of the Black Freighter, the animated segment to the film Watchmen [it was cut from the film but oh well I'll explain later] hits the shelves as well.
