The Concept Album

In popular music, a concept album is an album that is "unified by a theme, which can be instrumental, compositional, narrative, or lyrical".[1] Commonly, concept albums tend to incorporate preconceived musical or lyrical ideas rather than being improvised or composed in the studio, with all songs contributing to a single overall theme or unified story. This is in contrast to the practice of an artist or group releasing an album consisting of a number of unconnected (lyrically or otherwise) songs performed by the artist.

well with the release of the new decemberists album (which is a concept album) i feel the urge to list some of the best concept albums of all time in my opinion

David Bowie: The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars
Coheed and Cambria: All of their albums
The Flaming Lips: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
The Mars Volta: Frances The Mute (and their others)
Of Montreal: Skeletal Lamping
Porcupine Tree: Fear of a Blank Planet
The Smashing Pumpkins: Machina/The Machines of God

several of these bands are not surprising to have to be on this list but if you dig the concept of the concept album then give them a listen
