Jack's Mannequin
alright, concert is tonight, got the interview done, will post that later when i actually have it in an mp3 or wav format. for the time being its stuck on the recorder.
it was a nerve racking experience interviewing mr. andrew mcmahon and having to carefully pick and choose what you asked because you never know what someone might find a bit uncomfortable so with that in mind i had to word what i asked very carefully.
andrew was actually a real cool guy who couldn't stop smiling. i think he likes to talk and that's fine, so tune in wednesday for the interview, if you miss it, maybe i'll post it for you to hear, if not make sure you listen

After sitting back and learning about all the advertising fun we could have in class I took the time the other day to make hasteful note of all the beautiful ads I encountered during a regular day for me. Shockingly it wasn't as much as i thought, but then again I probably didn't count some of them. We are bombarded by ads every day, in every facet. Your very T-Shirt is considered an ad suggesting that we listen to that band or buy that beer or watch that movie. It's nothing short to suggest that that should count? But alas for the sake of my sanity I didn't count it!
The first batch of ads I encountered was on the campus bus. I am like a sloth, lazy and unmovable, which is why I was taking the bus. Slathered all on the ceiling of the bus was ads for intown places such as Camillos. I really didn't think much of it as I take the bus everyday about twice a day so I'm used to it. Personally I just find it funny that they even bother trying to reach poor kids like us.
Later that day when I got some time to log onto the world wide web that was brought to us by Al Gore I was bombarded with ads all over the place. Facebook seems to be stalking me in the non virtual world as the ads on the side bar all were for products or things that really would interest me. "Want to watch Boston Red Sox games online?" Hell yeah I do...oh wait, shit why did i click on that? (I didn't click) There were ads there for the silliest things, "Single? Want to mingle? Males 21+", um do you think I'm that desperate Facebook? They refused to comment on that.
Checking the baseball scores on MLB's own website to see if my beloved Red Sox won I get a pop up ad for NetFlix. I don't know why I, a baseball fan, give a damn about NetFlix. Later as i navigate the site there are ads for buying baseball merchandise and cable. CABLE! WOAH! That's new to me, do I want to buy my own cable?
After viewing all these ads, I realized that wow, this is just disturbing. I was too freaked out because I had to pay attention to even watch the television that night. I just went back to my room shut off the computer and turned on the PlayStation 3 and let that wipe my mind clean of this madness.

It's A Trap
article from AJC.com
Will a "Star Wars" character be the new Ole Miss mascot?
Starwars.com Admiral Ackbar commanded the Rebel Alliance Fleet in "Return of the Jedi."
Not if some Rebel fans get their way.
On Tuesday, Ole Miss students voted to find a new mascot to replace the abandoned Colonel Reb. A student committee will soon form to develop and propose a new mascot.
Admiral Ackbar, a member of the Mon Calamari species who led the Rebel Alliance ships into the Battle of Endor, appears to be the early favorite. He has more than 14,000 Facebook fans. Websites like notatrap.org -- "It's a trap!" was his famous line -- are promoting Ackbar's candidacy.
But members of the Ackbar alliance have taken some incoming fire. Angry students have contacted them and threatened to transfer if the alien rebel becomes the new face of Ole Miss, his supporters told the entertainment Web site TMZ.
The group even heard from parents of current and prospective students -- with some threatening to "never send their kids to Ole Miss" if the Admiral wins out, TMZ reported.
The folks at notatrap.org have soldiered on: "Who wants a Colonel when you could have an Admiral?" the Web site asks, before launching into "The Story of Ole Miss Ackbar."
"A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away ... Admiral Ackbar received a deep space transmission of SEC coverage. He found that he couldn't stop watching everything from football to volleyball. One team stood out to him, the Ole Miss Rebels. He led the Galactic Rebellion, and he knew he needed to be with the Ole Miss Rebels. And so, he started the long trek to Oxford, Miss."
The Colonel, who served as the official mascot for 24 years, was discontinued in 2003 when school officials decided his image was a bit too Old South and might offend some minorities.
The character still appears at pregame tailgating festivities on the Ole Miss campus, but he has no official role with the school.
It's unclear when an official decision will be made.
my thoughts are holy shit admiral ackbar as a college mascot! its real awesome. the pros, ADMIRAL FUCKING ACKBAR, cons its kind of a slap to the face of the school to have him be a mascot, i mean it's kinda stupid how people are reacting to this whole situation. i think the fact that people have threatened not to go to the school over this have to be the dumbest people in the world
i support this
Media Class
In 1983, U.S. exhibitors were so angered over Universal releasing "Pirates of Penzance" simultaneously on the bigscreen and pay per view that only 92 theaters played the film.
Fast forward 27 years: Disney and exhibitors have just brokered a brief cease-fire over "Alice in Wonderland" in what's still likely to be a long war over release windows.
At least that's the expectation that many in town have regarding the impact of Disney's stated policy to release two films a year earlier than the norm on DVD, beginning with 3D tentpole "Alice." That pic will come out on homevid three months after its March 5 theatrical bow, vs. the current standard of four months.
The four-month window has been in place for years; As recently as five to 10 years ago, the window was six months.
Several exhibs in various European territories agreed late last week to Disney's plan on "Alice" -- including major U.K. exhib Odeon, which had until Feb. 24 threatened a boycott -- opening the door for other majors to do the same with their bigger titles. "It certainly makes things easier for us," says one studio distribution topper.
Publicly, studios and exhibs are downplaying the importance of Disney's "Alice" victory, saying they're only talking about two titles a year. But between the six majors, that adds up to a dozen or more studio titles annually -- more if indies are included. And it could be more than two films for studios who release 18 or 20 titles a year.
For now, the discussion is strictly limited to the DVD window, but digital delivery windows will increasingly become more of a factor. Disney and Sony have said they'd like to offer movies on VOD at a premium charge even before a film's DVD debut, but no circuit is likely to allow that anytime soon.
So why the softening among circuits, despite the worry that they could lose traffic if a film is going to be quickly available on DVD?
One reason is that films are playing for shorter theatrical runs. Other key factors: Insiders say it took a big title like "Alice" to redraw the line. No exhib wanted to risk a poor quarterly earnings report because they'd passed on screening "Alice," whose commercial prospects appear bright, particularly with the upcharge for a 3D ticket. (After initially threatening a boycott, U.K. exhib Vue specifically cited its shareholders' interests when it backed off on its rhetoric and agreed to play the film.)
It's easy for exhibs to pass on independent films pushing shortened windows, as when Mark Cuban's company released Steven Soderbergh's "Bubble" day and date in theaters and on VOD. IFC and Magnolia continue to do day-and-date theatrical/VOD releases, though the indie titles often play mainly in the distribs' own theaters.
Also, execs on both sides of the debate say theater owners are sympathetic to the economic pressures studios face from the collapse of the DVD market. Circuits don't want these pressures resulting in fewer movies being produced.
"They want to be part of the process. It's better to bend than be brittle and break," one veteran exec says.
Studios are hoping to wring more DVD sales out of shortened windows for select titles, after disc sales went into a freefall when the economy collapsed in 2008.
Studios also say they can save on marketing costs by overlapping their DVD and theatrical campaigns.
And the majors say more flexibility will allow them to better time DVD releases to specific dates, such as holiday and vacation periods. They have, for instance, avoided opening bigger titles in September because the film's DVD won't come out in time for Christmas. Disney wanted to release "Alice" before June, since DVD sales slow during summer.
Theater owners have long urged studios to release their bigger titles year-round instead of clumping them in summer or over holidays.
And U.S. circuits still want each studio, including Disney, to abide by an average window of four months, meaning some of their films could be released earlier than four months and some later.
Over the past several years, exhibs have quietly been giving studios their OK to release smaller titles on DVD early, particularly films that have come and gone quickly at the box office. Event pics like "Alice" have largely been off limits, although Paramount persuaded theater owners last fall to go along with the early release of "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra." (Early is considered to be anything 90 days and under.)
Disney hasn't announced when "Alice" would be available on VOD or streaming services. Many big releases from Warners, Sony and Summit are available day and date on VOD and DVD, while other studios wait a few weeks for VOD.
Some rival studios were surprised at the ease with which U.S. exhib chains signed onto Disney's plan. Insiders say Disney's cause was aided by bringing U.S. exhibitors into the discussions early on. By contrast, a number of exhibs last fall pulled Sony's "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" when the studio announced an early DVD release, saying they felt blindsided.
Disney also offered repeated assurances that early DVD releases weren't a blanket policy; They only intend to do so with two titles a year.
There was a hiccup when Disney topper Bob Iger -- Hollywood's most vocal proponent of shortened windows -- raised the issue during an earnings call with investors. Some exhibs took this to mean that Iger was indeed in favor of collapsing windows entirely.
The next day, newly installed Disney prexy of distribution Bob Chapek issued a statement saying Disney was committed to preserving the theatrical window.
Overseas was another matter. Circuits in the U.K., the Netherlands, Belgium and Italy reacted strongly to Disney's proposal to shorten the theatrical window on select titles and threatened to pass on "Alice."
Both Odeon and Vue said they'd boycott "Alice." They relented after round-the-clock negotiations, including commitments from Disney that it wouldn't advertise the DVD until at least six to eight weeks after the film's theatrical debut.
Vue announced early last week that it would carry "Alice." By the next day, Odeon was facing under enormous pressure via the press over its decision to boycott the film. The Guardian even ran a poll asking readers what they thought.
By week's end, Odeon dropped its opposition and said it would play "Alice" in the U.K., Ireland and Italy, the three territories where a boycott had been threatened.
from variety
as we had discussed in class disney is trying to capitalize on the money it would be making from the release of "Alice in Wonderland" which will be in theaters in 3-D by putting it out on DVD in three months as compared to the fact that it would be four months instead (which is the norm). although unlike what was stated in class the dvd would be in 3-D as that technology doesn't exist yet. the reason that disney is doing this is not only to capitalize profits but to prove that they are that awesome and can pull that stuff off.
the topic of discussion would be why is disney able to do this even though theaters would be boycotting (which they arent) and costing themselves money? what is it that they would gain?

Super Bowl's Super Thoughts
every year we find a way to top our show, presentation whatever you want to call the super bowl. and guess what? we always do.
this is what pisses me off about this event. i understand that it's a once in a year thing, its a big thing, football is huge, i understand that and i respect that. but what we go through just for a game is retarded. if you pardon my inappropriate vernacular i'll get to my point.
several years ago we had a controversy during halftime, i dubbed it the nip slip, i'm sure everyone else did as well. due to that the super bowl's half time act has gotten more and more expensive (at least it seems) going from petty to the stones to mccartney to the who.
it's funny, they want to go with non-controversial acts, acts that won't cause these problems that janet and j-timblerlake caused. but when i saw the who up there not even playing a full song (just a medley) it seemed like a joke. like they paraded around these rock and roll hall of famers just for viewers, more numbers. hey let's have them play the more well known part of their songs! its disrespectful and a shame to the band.
not to mention that the band sucked, yeah i said it, the who sucked. why did the who suck? they are old, they look horrible, they sounded terrible. why did we have to drag the last two living members of this band humiliate themselves on national tv with everyone watching
oh and this also gets on my nerves. every year the commercials that they ari are more and more expensive, it becomes a game where you want to see how much you can spend to advertise a product. you got a commercial with megan fox on it advertising a phone, now you have everyone buying that phone bc megan fox was sitting a bath tub nude.
its amazing how we can still spend so much money in this economy. im not pinning any blame on either the president or previous ones, it's just real dumb to see what happens when we just throw money out the window. that money, well it could be used to help the economy get better. doritos why are you spending 30 million (throwing a random number out there) for X amount of spots, that money could be used for something other than that.
anyway, hopefully the rest of the game comes back and makes up for the shit that we have to deal with
Media Journal Thingy Ma Bober
Last Thursday I logged the activities I partook in that involved consuming the media or what I considered to be the consumption of media. Most of my media intake comes in via my computer which is pretty much connected to the world so to speak via the internet.
In the morning I wake up and have music going since I listen to it while I sleep to help clear my head from a busy day. That morning I happened to have been awoken to Elliott Smith’s “Needle in the Hay” and I felt that was a bad way to actually start the day as it’s such a somber song and quite depressing. Upon reaching my computer I would switch the music to Minus the Bear to pump myself up as well as wake myself up.
While I was doing that I opened up Mozilla Firefox and checked my most visited forums to see what was new on the web on this lovely snow threatened world today. After viewing those forums I checked several news sites including BBC and CNN to get a decent intake of the days news.
After sitting through a long class about news writing I went up to the Bear’s Den to watch a live performance by my friend as she ended up playing for forty minutes during the eleven o’clock free hour. It was relaxing as acoustical tracks happen to do that no matter what, well usually they do.
Between the end of the performance and my next class I went back to the computer down in the KUR station and checked on the forums and news sites again to see if there was any new updates in anything. I noticed that there were more stories on Haiti still and that kind of bothered me, I have nothing against the people or what happened but there isn’t anything else we can do to fix things is there? We can’t go back in time and prevent it so why are we still talking about it?
After my last class was over I went back to my room and popped in a movie on my computer. I watched the latest George Clooney film, “Up In The Air” as it was close to the awards season and I wanted to watch a film. It made me feel a little depressed since the film had that notion about it yet at the end it felt uplifting as it didn’t end up giving that happy ending per say that you expect from films.
After the film my friends and I hopped in the car and left for Allentown and the show we were going to. I had no control over the radio at all so we were left with Owl City and Lady GaGa being played through the cd player. This was not a fun trip by any means as these two musicians infuriate my and make me want to punch things that don’t need punching.
Before the show started at the venue there was a projector playing for some ungodly reason the best of Will Ferrell Saturday night live dvd. I was confused because I wasn’t sure whether or not to laugh at this or not as most people think this man is hilarious, I really am not sure.
For the next four hours the concert was on, 3 acts, and it was a thrilling experience. I was excited, pumped, then angry as the breaks between acts got longer and longer. But once the main act came out it was this huge relief coming over me and I just ended up losing myself in the moment.
The rest of the evening found me listening to music, even though the ride back consisted of the same things as the ride to except I was like half asleep when we were going back anyway. When I got back to my room around one in the morning I listened to more of my music on shuffle and eventually fell back into sleep where I would wake up wondering what the hell am I listening to.

Screwed the Pooch
i have been paying attention of late to teh conan/leno fiasco over at nbc and a lot of people are showing support for coco which if you ask me is amazing but sadly it's a little too late
the nbc execs are poor decision makers if you ask me giving conan less than a year to establish a credible audience and it's only now with his cancellation in the coming days that the viewers are tuning in
coco has always done an amazing job with whatever he has been apart of, writing for SNL and the Simpsons and the Late Show as well as the Tonight Show. i've decided to watch the show in teh past week or so and don't understand why coco is being pulled other than both him and leno aren't getting what nbc wants in the terms of viewers.
i'll update this post later when i have time but for now all i can say is i'm with coco
and ps kyle and tim are returning next wednesday to the airwaves @ 10 pm, so unless kur execs do the same thing look forward to a great show

It's been a while
hey guys i know it's been a while since i last updated, almost two months ago, but a lot has been happening whether or not you like it or not. mike and jim over at nevermind the mainstream have been preparing top lists from 2009 and to be honest i was trying myself and well i failed miserably hence the lack of updating LOL
also i spent the past month or so slaving away at a thankless job so that also hurt my updating prowess. many new things have happened, new albums by Motion City Soundtrack, Los Campesinos! have dropped and are listenable and people they aren't terrible.
